  2. Sadika...so if we do not do everything that we can to the best of our ability then are we no longer human?

  4. I think that it means that we make mistakes as humans. And I also think it means that we are the only existing bipedal homosapiens.

  5. clayton... what do you mean by technology? Don't chimpanzees take sticks and stick them into termite mounds? Isn't that a technological advancement? And chimpanzees have opposable thumbs too.
And what does it mean to be at the top of the food chain? That we have no predators?

  7. It is our ability to convince ourselves into to thinking that what we do is justified. An example would be all of the conquering of other races and the terrorizing of others in the misguided thought that it is the best for a certain belief.
It is our ability to lie and hate that makes us human. Sure other animals may alter and hide things, but no other animals, including chimpanzees, have the ability to lie at the same extent as we do. Other animals also don’t carry hate like we do. Generations of people still loath each other even though their disagreement started centuries before their birth.
These characteristics separate us and make us unique in the animal kingdom, but maybe it is our power to overcome these bad traits that makes us human.

  8. Tiernan...another interesting idea, but which is it?
Our ability to convince ourselves that what we do is justified? Or our power to overcome these traits?

  9. To be human means that you are able to live and die, to feel compassion more than other animals. You are human cause you know you were born and you know you will die. You are Overall, to be human is to want to know things, to know where you came from and what might happen in the future.

  10. It is are ability to make mistakes but to learn and prosper from them. I also think it is our ability to grow smarter faster than other animals.

  11. To be human means to find a way to become an asset to society, and to improve the way of life for ourselves and others so that we may enjoy life easily. It also means that it is ok to make mistakes but to learn from each mistake so that ourselves and others do not continue to make the same ones and cause harm or danger to ourselves. As far as the mental and physical aspect of being human, we have a mind and body to help guide us to the decisions we make.

  12. To be human means to have the ability to make choices about all parts of your life. Humans have the ability to decide what they will eat, drink, do that day, where they will live, vacation, and visit, who they will talk to, friend on facebook, ask to a dance, and most importantly, who they will be. We also make choices for other animals. Our pets have no options, no matter what the situation is. We decide when they eat, sleep, and go for walks or play. So being human means that we are the ones who choose what we do with ourselves. -Jack Barton

  13. Before this class I hadn't considered what it meant to be human. Now that we have learned about it I think that it means we are part of a cycle of life. We are born, we live for a certain reason in life, and then once we have learned our lesson than we are sent off into another world to learn a new lesson. We have to be able to fit into our surroundings and we learn something new every day. As long as you have the ability to think on your own and create ideas for yourself and learn something you can be human. Rene Decartes emphasizes human reasoning by saying, "I think therefore I am." He believes that if you can solve problems by yourself than you are worthy enough to be a human. I also believe this, but to a lesser extant, more along the lines of: If you learn something everyday than you are a human.

  14. I think being human means to be able to make mistakes, learn from them, and then correct yourself (if you wish to). I also think having dominion over other creatures is a big part of being human, like God said in Genesis 1:26. -Grace Dennard

  18. The act of “being human” is a complex issue that can have many different meanings. The literal meaning of course is to be part of the Bipedal Homo Sapiens species, but being human goes far beyond just walking on two feet. All humans possess certain traits and instincts that define our species. These traits include things like having a natural curiosity about the world and a want for knowledge, and the want to create new things, especially things that will help us in everyday life. Even before the cavemen and the creation of the wheel, humans have been developing new ideas for creations that make the jobs in life easier and more efficient. Yet another part of being human is being the superior race on earth. At the present, humans are the most advanced creatures with the largest brain capacity on Earth. With being the most superior race on the planet, also comes the responsibility to preserve the other species that we coexist with. Overtime though, as the human population has increased, this responsibility has become more and more neglected. People also use the term “being human” to describe the imperfections associated with the human species. When a person makes mistakes or bad decisions, people tend to justify the mistakes by saying that the individual is just “being human”. A final element that sets our species apart from the rest of the animal kingdom is the depth with which we live our lives. For instance, the sole purpose of many species existence is for them to reproduce. While reproduction is still important to humans, we do not put as big of an emphasis on having children as most species. Most humans will only have one or two children in their lifetime, a lifetime that on average spans around 75 years. Because of the low percentage of our lifetime that we spend raising children, we humans have more time to focus on increasing our knowledge. Although being human is topic that includes many different aspects, in general it means to exemplify the many traits that make our species unique in the animal kingdom.

  19. I believe that being human gives use the power to accept God and have eternal life, which other creatures cannot do. As humans we have souls, which gives us deep feelings and emotions. When God created humans, he gave us dominion over all the creatures and our actions can affect the lives of animals and the well being of the Earth. Being human makes us accountable for our actions, which can effect us positively or negatively.

  20. What it means to be Human is the overwhelming ability to posses memories. We, unlike any other animal in the world, have the ability to remember things taught, said, or shown to us and we do not have to keep rediscovering the same thing, we remember it. We remember these things so well to the extent that we can reflect and build upon these memories. This is why Humans have gone from Neanderthals to almost building their way through evolution. Houses, Skyscrapers, Technology! It all revolves around our unique and amazing memory.

  21. What it means to be Human is the huge difference in intelligence than other animals. Also, humans have the ability to have emotions. Other beings cannot feel hate or love or compassion as deeply as humans. Human brains hold these tools and are able to remember them and successfully use and build on them, unlike other animals. Our brains have enabled us to pick up on things quicker than other animals and therefore, we were able to evolve faster. We also have the ability to dream about the future and know the differences between right and wrong. Overall, what it means to be human is the size and ability of our brains.

  22. I think that being human means to have complex emotions and thought processes. These emotions could be like empathy and compassion. It means to care for others when something is wrong. On the other hand, it also means to kill for almost no reason. Animals usually kill for a reason, like for food or survival. Humans also display the emotion vengeance as in wanting revenge when something is done to you. We also make choices based on our experiences and knowledge of the complex world. We feel the need to expand into the world of unknown technology and complex tools. We also have beliefs in how we were created, and believe in religions.

  23. What does it mean to be human? Being human can be looked at as a responsibility. God gave us eternal life over all other creatures. As humans we feel everything, emotions that help us make decisions in our lives. The fact that we can think; the thought that we have so much more space for knowledge than another creature of Earth is mind blowing. In a way we speed up evolution itself as we learn more and more about our surroundings, what boundaries we can reach and then reach beyond. God created Earth so that we have dominion over all the creatures. Everything little or big thing we do, it effects everything else around us; other humans, all other creatures, and even the Earth itself. Which means that we have to take responsibility for all our actions. We make mistakes but then we have to learn from them. It’s that simple. To go forward instead of backwards we have to learn, take one step at a time, and don’t miss a single thing. We created what direction this world went in, by learning. Why do we call Earth, earth? Because that is the name we gave it. Why do we go to school or college or even work? Because as humans we have created a world, a society that has progressed so much that sometimes we even know what direction we are going in. Its predictable… but then again is it really? We don’t even know because as humans we are unpredictable sometimes.

  24. To be human means that we have feelings. If you are an animal or other living thing you can't love, hate, feel guilty, have remorse, or have any other feelings for that matter. A human also has a conscience which lets him know that deep down what he is doing is either right or wrong. Another thing that separates a human from an animal is that we can remember things; though sometimes our memory is selective and we cannot recall everything, animals can hardly remember anything. Humans also have a much more advanced mind than any other living thing and are able to create and modify inventions, but these inventions are not like something that an animal makes out of grass and leaves; humans are capable of devising a highly complex technological machine that can then be manufactured and shipped around the world so that all other humans can have access to that machine as well. Humans have stores and dress themselves. They are the only single species that has more than one hundred languages but can effectively teach a language to another human that does not speak that specific language. Humans are also the only living thing that can communicate over thousands of miles. We have the capability of traveling around the world in less than a few days. No other animal can do that. It also means that humans make their own decisions and don't just follow whatever the leader is doing. We are also the only thing that chooses to walk on two legs but could walk on four. On the whole to be human means to be the most mentally and emotionally advanced and evolved than any other living thing.

  25. i think it means to adapt to our surroundings n smarter and faster ways. it means to change to be better fit to lve on earth. we can also make our own choices. it means to be set apart from different animals. walking on two legs is just one of the things that sets us apart. Also no other animal has religion. we are the only species that worships a "creator"

  26. To be a human it means that you have a soul and have deeper feelings and relationships than any other species. It means to have dominion over all of earths resources. Humans have a extremely different thought process than any other creature on Earth. We are the most educated and the most intelligent. We are the only animals with true emotions who can truly love and truly hate. We are the only ones who who celebrate religion. Humans have dreams and desires. Humans live long, full beautiful lives. Humans can experience everything in a deep way. But human life can also be greatly unfair. People live in huge houses with extreme amounts of money, while some people make less than 2 dollars a year. But in total, what it means to be a human is to experience life in a deeper and more connected way than all other animals.

  27. Being human means that we in particular are different from other animal species in many different ways, some better and some worse. It also means that we have evolved to a point where there are no longer any other species similar to ours, apart from apes, whom we supposedly have come from. Darwinism suggests that only the most adaptable animals will survive, and because we as humans have adapted well, our species is still around after thousands of years. As humans we can feel many different emotions, whether they are positive or negative, and they have a large impact on our lives. Being human is also similar to any other animal lifestyle: you have to eat or else you'll die. Some people, like some other species, go out and just kill other animals to eat. But the more common human way is using a slightly different approach. Farmers for example, keep cows, pigs, and chickens well fed for a long time before they eat them, in order to create a new generation of these animals before they die. Humans also use inventions that we make ourselves to help our daily lives, and we are some of the only species to do so. Business and trade is also a big part of our lives as humans. As humans, we have been constantly moving and changing forever, and we will continue do so.

  28. I think that being human means being able to both make mistakes and learn from them. I also think that being human means to be able to make your own decisions and stray from "the norm" and go off into the unknown and the undiscovered. I think that by being human means being able to see more and create more. Humans have ability to create more because humans have all of the "best" attributes from animals. They have opposable thumbs, the ability to walk on both two and four leg, and minds as complex as computers.
