Blog Question #13

What are the advantages of an empire over the republican form of government?  What are the disadvantages?

  1. An empire is a diverse group of people and goods united under one leader through hegemony or dominance. An empire usually fails because the people in the empire rebel and even the military gets tired of fighting and it also fails because of overextension of the empire himself. An empire is at a greater disadvantage because it sets itself up to fail. The people prefer a republic.

A republic is much rather preferred by all of the people in a certain territory because in a republic the people elect representatives to make all of the decisions instead of one leader. The advantages for a republic are, the people are on your side and there is not as much fighting included unless within the republic for certain classes.

  2. When you say people, who do you mean specifically?
    Other ideas to consider:
-does a republic run the risk of failing? Why?
-When might a Republic not be an effective form of government?
-when would an empire be preferred?

A good start to answer the question, but there is more to consider.

  3. Empires and republics are both unique forms of government. Empires are diverse collections of peoples under one unified title. In Empires, the power generally resides with one single leader. A republic on the other hand is a government in which the power resides with the people. In a republic the citizens of a state elect officials to represent them in government. One of the advantages of an empire over a republic is that an empire generally has a strong established leader, which makes it more difficult for a shift in power to take place. In a republic it is easier for individuals to gain too much power. One advantage of a republic over an empire on the other hand is that even ordinary people can represent themselves in government. In a republic all citizens theoretically can be part of the government. By letting the power reside with the citizens, there is a reduced risk of rebellion than in empires where groups of peoples are often times forced to join.

  4. Based off of what we discussed in class today, I say that the advantage to having a single ruler rather than a group controlling the government would be the lack of bureaucracy in the government. Decisions would be made faster if only one person was making them rather than a group debating over what to do. This is most likely why some countries go under militaristic rule during times of war when vital decisions need to be made fast rather the discussed.
The downside to this form of government would be the lack of certainty of the emperors decisions. Who's to know if the leader is a complete knuckle head. A group would more likely make better, more thought out decisions as several people debated on the pros and cons of certain choices.
