Blog Question #12

Why did the Roman Republic fail?

5 comments:

  1. The Roman Republic failed because the militaristic empire became really strong and the generals gained most of the power. Soon after the generals themselves began giving orders and their struggles to be leaders would lead to a civil war in Rome and therefore the end of the Republic. It failed because of the military who wanted to gain power and Julia Caesar came to power as a dictator.

  2. is Julia Caesar related to Julia Childs? (JK)

Good first half of an answer, but there are other reasons as well.
Any ideas of what they could be?

  3. The Roman Republic failed mainly because the generals of their military gained too much power. At the beginning of the decline of the republic, the Roman senate and general assembly held a check on powerful military leader's power. Over time though, the generals gained more and more power until their orders began overshadowing those of the senate and the general assembly. As these generals became even more powerful, they began competing amongst themselves to gain the most amount of power. This struggle for power ultimately lead to civil war, which in turn lead to the disintegration of the republic.
Another reason that played a role in the decline of the Roman Republic was the conflict between the social classes. Around the time that the republic began declining, the struggle between the "Plebs" (Plebeians), the working class, the "equites" (the lower high class), and the "patricii" (the highest class) became more pronounced. The growing dissatisfaction among these socials groups also lead to the dissolution of the Roman republic.

  4. Conflict between the poor and the rich led to tension inside the empire. The rich controlled much of the senate and only allowed a few to stand for the much larger poor population in the senate. Even some of those that were to stand for the right of the poor were puppets to the rich.
This unbalance of power led to further segregation between the two classes. As the rich got richer the poor became poorer. Soon a revolution slowly began and civil war broke loose. Many civil wars were fought and soon the balance of power went from the senate to military leaders and from conflict between the generals of the military, a dictatorship arose, therefor permanently ending the Republic form of government that the Romans started as.
